As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:
Between six and 10 local Republicans are considering a run against incumbent Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction, next year, according to senior members of the Mesa County Republican Party.
Alan Farina, chairman of the candidate search committee, said his committee has attracted a series of serious candidates who could run against the two-term incumbent next year.
“We actually have several people expressing interest,” Farina said, “some really, really good candidates.”
Farina declined to name names.
Buescher took over his seat, previously held by Republican Gayle Berry, following a fiery 2004 campaign against Republican stalwart Shari Bjorklund. He retained the seat in 2006 by a wide margin, despite hundreds of thousands of dollars in aggressive campaign ads against him.
The candidate committee cannot bar multiple Republicans from running for the Republican nomination, but Farina said he and other party leaders are trying to avoid a primary election.
Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dick Wadhams acknowledged Friday that Buescher is “a strong incumbent,” even though he felt House District 55 “should be” a Republican seat…

Maybe. But actually, it’s a swing district. District 55 been held by a Democrat twelve of the last twenty years, and by a “moderate” for all twenty. Before Berry held the seat, it was won and held for four terms by Dan Prinster.
That’s what the GOP politicos have become – a culture of privilege. It’s corrupted them thoroughly and completely, just as the Democrats got all saggy during their 40-year reign in Congress (but worse and more quickly…).
The GOP knows that Buescher will be Speaker some day, and after that, Governor. They’re trying to George Allen-ize him.
Is Shari Bjorkland our very own Ruthie/Sybil/Fright Wig? Just wondering…….
I always pictured Ruthie as a young Republican type, not yet out of college, high on her own west slope political acumen (or at least high on something).
Sounds like the Repubs are dogpiling on each other more than on Beuscher! Primaries aren’t inherently weakening IMO, but 6-10 candidates? Beuscher can just sit back and watch them all try to out-wingnut each other.

Yet, according to the SoS site…
COUNTY Bernie Buescher (DEM) Bob Caskey (REP)
MESA 13466 11158
Total votes 13466 11158
Percentages 54.69 % 45.31 %
Sure, it’s a decent margin, but not huge. Especially considering the toxic enviorment for Republicans last year. This is probably going to be another competitive cycle for this seat.
a 9% margin in a district that is majority Republican is a big win. You can frame it how you want.
why would his district want to dump the chair of the JBC and the vice-chair of the Appropriations committee and possibly the next Speaker of the House?
but Oliver is right when you look at it in relative terms. And it does seem like Buescher’s constituents are content to keep him. I’ve never lived down that way but I imagine that the folks there are more independent and probably don’t want government interference in their lives which tends to make one conservative. It goes to show how far social conservative nonsense will go with folks, especially when it’s at the expense of getting the day-to-day business of the lege done.
ten points in an extremely Democratic year isn’t as impressive as ten points in an extremely Republican year. That’s why he’s a target.
If BB wins in 2008 while BS is beating Udall by a decent margin, and Mitt Romney is carrying the state by ten points, then I’ll be impressed….
How far does an “extremely democratic year” go down the ticket? I think you are denial about the veracity of BB’s win.
That Dems expanded their majorities in both houses…
was winning in 2004. I guess you could call that a neutral year, what with Bush and the Salazars winning…
Who did he run against in 2004? I’m ashamed that I didn’t take the time to look….do you know anything about the Rep candidate then?
Honestly, I was on my mission for the 2004 election, so I can’t say what kind of year it was here first hand. But as an “outsider”, I would call that an even year, though the republicans definately had some struggles that the Dems didn’t
and only heard of Bernie when Sybil/Ruthie first made her appearance on this blog to bash him in favor of his opponent Bob Caskey. I found out what everyone else knew, other than who he beat. I believe the seat was vacant at the time – it would have been a stunner if he unseated an incumbent ‘pub.
Is that it was an open seat in 2004
I believe someone once posted that his opponent has a hard right social conservative of the kind usually found in Colorado Springs. Don’t know how she ran her campaign but she must have all but called for a christian theocracy. Maybe someone who was there can tell us…
And the margin for BB was about the same in 2004 as it was in 2006, and while I haven’t heard a lot about his 06 opponent, it seems that he ran a less than stellar campaign
